18.1 Mission⁄purpose of .INC
The mission of .INC is to provide incorporated businesses and organizations with an alternative “home domain” for their online presence. We envision that through strategic marketing campaigns designed to brand the domain, it will become a premium online namespace for a variety of for and not-for-profit entities. Given the US alone has 3.5mm registered corporations with at least $100,000 of annual revenues, the addressable need is significant. Incorporated entities generally have to provide public notice of their legal structure (i.e. displaying “Inc.” in their name) in order to avail its owners of the associated benefits. The .INC TLD can aid registrants in complying with this requirement. This general domain will also provide new registrants with better, more relevant alternatives to the limited options remaining for current commercial TLD names. In addition, recognizing that “INC” is commonly referenced under law as a means of identifying a specific type of business entity in the United States and other countries, we would like to provide an opportunity during the Sunrise Period to registered companies and businesses, in all major jurisdictions around the world, to participate under their trade names in order to protect legitimate businesses and consumers from confusion or fraud. For example, in the US, we will engage the Secretaries of State of each State (or equivalent state agency) to ensure that legally and appropriately registered trade names, have an adequate period of time to purchase a new domain name matching their trade name. More details on this can be found on the reply to question 29 and in section 18-C below.

The mission of .LTD is to provide businesses and organizations that are structured as a private limited company with an alternative “home domain” for their online presence. We envision that through strategic marketing campaigns designed to brand the domain, it will become a premium online namespace for a variety of companies structured as an LTD. Given the prevalence of this corporate structure in the United Kingdom and other Commonwealth nations (e.g., India, Canada, etc.), the addressable need is significant. While difficult to pinpoint, estimates indicate that over 750,000 businesses are registered using this structure in the United Kingdom alone. Private limited companies generally have to provide public notice of their legal structure (i.e. displaying “Ltd.” or “Limited” in their name) in order to avail its owners of the associated benefits. The .LTD TLD can aid registrants in complying with this requirement. This general domain will also provide new registrants with better, more relevant alternatives to the limited options remaining for current commercial TLD names. In addition, recognizing that “LTD” is commonly referenced under law as a means of identifying a specific type of business entity in the UK and other countries, we would like to provide an opportunity during the Sunrise Period to registered companies and businesses, in all major jurisdictions around the world, to participate under their trade names in order to protect legitimate businesses and consumers from confusion or fraud. For example, in the UK, we will engage relevant company incorporation agencies to ensure that legally and appropriately registered trade names, have an adequate period of time to purchase a new domain name matching their trade name.
