The forms of fashion are vast. Every year, fashion designers create billions of dresses, suits, shoes, and other clothing and accessories. Fashion designers study fashion trends, design of clothing and accessories, select colors and fabrics, and oversee the final production of their designs.

According to NPD Group, the apparel market in the U.S. alone was $189 billion in 2009. About 31 percent of fashion designers work for apparel, piece goods, and notions merchant wholesalers; and 13 percent worked for apparel manufacturers. Fashion is a major industry in several industrialized countries, including Japan, Italy, and France.

Fashion plays a significant role in the way people identify themselves and others. It is an important means of self-expression and self-identification.
